Journal
“Archaeologies of the Self” is a group exhibition featuring works by Maria Centeno, Jose Luis Ochoa, Emeric Minaya and Marga G. Polanco and it is based on the artistic process, the use of matter and the image as a plastic concept, it delves into creative uncertainties, events, encounters, and discoveries.
Within an undefined space that delves into our unconscious minds, the archaeologies of the self form a series of works encompassing multiple visions and interpretations of that universe we call the inner self. The diverse styles and languages that constitute this exhibition map layers and sub-layers of sensitivity, ambiguity, experience, and knowledge, inviting us to introspection and analysis.
Reflection on “Archaeologies of the Self”
The unconscious is the deepest layer of psychic processes, a completely dark region, in contrast to the clarity of consciousness and the semi-clarity of the subconscious. Our self, understood as a symbolic form, prompts us to move from one realm to another and cross the boundary that separates them.
The self is our hidden and personal imaginary, the reserved space for our dreams, obsessions, traumas, or our most brilliant scenarios; the memory of landscapes that made us tremble or move us, the choked words or those that echo sharply within us, like an infinite echo. We are ourselves when no one is looking and listening. We are our shadow on the earth we tread, tightly clutching the idea of ourselves to our chest.
