Decoration and utility should go hand in hand when designing any space in the home. This is because, in addition to being beautiful, a living room or bathroom must also be functional. Furthermore, in the case of the bathroom, this consideration becomes even more relevant, as it is a very dynamic room, used by household members as well as visitors, and must fulfill several functions.

So if you already have the sink and toilet model clear, if you are opting for a bathtub or shower, and if there will or will not be a bidet in the room, it's time to consider what the rest of the elements that will accompany the main pieces will be like.

5 important decisions

Mirroryour choice will depend on how the bathroom is used, but generally you should avoid small mirrors that, far from making the room feel more spacious, are a case of "wanting but not being able." So it's better to opt for a medium to large model that will increase the brightness and, preferably, place it above the sink.

Partition, panel, curtainThe image a bathroom projects will be completely different depending on how the bathtub or shower tray is accompanied. The options are varied: hinged or sliding door shower screens, fixed panels, curtains, or even nothing if it won't be used frequently... Beyond individual tastes, the premise is to avoid blocking windows or light sources with this element.

Towel rackDepending on the available space, you can opt for a wall-mounted or stove model, which are more functional than decorative, or choose a freestanding or bar model with an attractive design that adds personality to the room.

StorageWhat are you going to store in the bathroom? Towels, makeup, creams, spare items… Depending on all of that, a simple glass shelf, a vanity unit, or a storage cabinet with ample capacity might be sufficient. Whatever the need to be met, it must be in balance with the other pieces and avoid cluttering the space.

Lighting: as we already broke down in our post ‘Let your bathroom shine with its own light.’, the choice of lamps and spotlights is very important in this room of the house. Maximizing available natural light and installing the necessary number of light fixtures are the main objectives. From here, this element can be used to give a simple mirror a new dimension or to create a makeup corner worthy of any dressing room.

Accessories, where personality resides

The soap dish, toothbrush holder, or towel rack are a set of elements typically placed around the sink. They can be put on the basin itself, attached to the wall, or you can opt for models that have them integrated. If they are external accessories, you should consider whether to choose the same collection for a cohesive look or break away with original and distinct pieces.

Other practical elements that can bring a distinct design to your bathroom include the toilet paper dispenser, the trash can, an original bath mat, or even a small bench if space permits.
