Bathco Atelier
TrendsThanks to artistic movements like Urban Art or Street Art, art is no longer a privilege of the few, but has become part of our lives; art takes to the streets and becomes an increasingly powerful tool of expression. Can we go further? Can we bring art into our homes? Can art be linked to interior design and decoration? Bathco has set out to answer these questions through the initiative Bathco Atelier; A workshop of artistic creation and experimentation where 8 multidisciplinary artists intervene the sinks piece by piece, transforming them into works of art in themselves.
We spoke with the workshop director, Emeric Minaya.
What does Bathco Atelier aim to do?
This is a completely innovative project in the bathroom ceramics industry; this workshop was born with the purpose of linking product development to the world of culture and art. This has meant implementing a new area in the company where 8 artists have had the opportunity to express our way of feeling and living art.
How was the initial contact with this new “canvas”?
We've had the opportunity to “play” with ceramics, study the material, and conduct “in situ” tests. A thoroughly enriching experience for the artists, who have discovered a whole world of possibilities. With this project, Bathco has allowed this aspect to multiply exponentially. The result of all this experimentation is a collection of 14 pieces that are already on the market and reflect the essence of each of the artists.
What has surprised you the most about working with ceramics?
It has nothing to do with “cold” work. That is, with painting on canvas or any type of material or support. The work of ceramics is directly linked to the kiln. And this means that you have to take into account the surprise factor. No matter how many tests you do, the behavior of materials and pigments in the kiln always represents an uncertainty for the artist, and at the same time, it becomes a fun creative and experimental endeavor.
What was the outcome of this research?
The result of this experimental phase was unique. We discovered that we could apply countless materials to intervene in porcelain, but there was something we could not, and should not, do without: a return to the old technique of artisanal decoration. In essence, we recovered an almost ancestral technique; it was the only way to guarantee the durability of the sinks coming out of Bathco Atelier.
Porcelain sinks can be worked with a variety of materials and techniques. **Materials:** * **Cleaning agents:** Mild dish soap, baking soda, vinegar, commercial porcelain cleaners. Avoid abrasive cleaners, steel wool, and harsh chemicals, as these can scratch or damage the surface. * **Sealants/Polishes:** For added shine and protection, you can use specialized porcelain sealants or car wax. * **Grout/Caulk:** If the sink is installed with a porcelain tile backsplash or a countertop, you may need grout or caulk for sealing and aesthetic purposes. * **Repair kits:** For minor chips or cracks, porcelain repair kits are available. These often come in a paste or putty form that can be colored to match the sink. **Techniques:** * **Regular Cleaning:** The most common technique is regular cleaning with a soft cloth or sponge and mild soap. This prevents buildup and maintains the shine. * **Stain Removal:** For stubborn stains, techniques like creating a paste of baking soda and water, or using vinegar, can be effective. Letting these sit for a period before gently scrubbing can lift stains. * **Scratch Repair:** For very fine scratches, some people have success with a porcelain repair kit, following the manufacturer's instructions carefully. For deeper scratches, professional restoration might be necessary. * **Chip Repair:** Small chips can often be filled using a porcelain repair kit. The process typically involves cleaning the chipped area, applying the repair material, and then sanding and polishing it to blend in. * **Polishing:** To restore shine to a dull sink, a porcelain sealant or even car wax can be applied and buffed with a soft cloth. * **Professional Refinishing:** For significant damage, staining, or a desire to change the color, professional refinishing services are available. This is a more involved process that can renew the appearance of the sink. * **Installation/Replacement:** When installing or replacing a porcelain sink, techniques involve proper sealing with plumber's putty or silicone caulk, ensuring correct plumbing connections, and securely mounting the sink to the countertop or vanity.
As I was saying, although we haven't been able to do without the use
From ceramic paintings, we have discovered the infinite possibilities for experimentation that porcelain offers us. A very interesting example is the modeling and application of structural materials directly onto porcelain. Materials such as glass, clay, or metallic particles become part of the piece thanks to the possibilities offered by the “fire” technique. This means the fusion of materials with ceramics thanks to the direct application of fire. This guarantees greater durability than any chemical product can offer.
What is most surprising about this workshop?
One aspect of the work developed at Bathco Atelier is quite challenging, and Bathco is investing heavily in it. The company offers the possibility of using this workshop as a creative space for interior designers, architects, and specialized clients. This allows them to work with us, the artists in the workshop, to create “ad hoc” pieces for their bathroom interior design projects. These works would be based on the development of tile murals that continue the designs created on the washbasins.
