Art Deco in the center of Madrid

Projects, Residential

The interior architect Claudia Schulteis opens the doors to one of their latest projects where they have carried out distribution and interior design work, in which pre-existing old elements are recovered, adding those that had disappeared over the years and combining them with a bold, classic, and contemporary decoration.

Carla Reyes from the magazine Interiors He fell in love with its location next to Madrid's El Retiro Park,«In an emblematic building in the capital, with 3-meter high ceilings, in one of the most beautiful entrances in the city... it was enough to see it, discover its light and its possibilities, for its new owners to fall head over heels for its charms and decide to acquire it.«.

a space that is a pleasure to live and work in, as well as to receive guests and enjoy with family.

Claudia Schulteis tells us about this renovated home on O'Donnell Street. “We always focus on making a space convey emotions, have its own personality, and reflect the initial concept, drawing from the Gatsby era. The project was developed from the search for the real estate property (the apartment), demolition, architectural design, interior architecture design, decoration, props, styling, and furnishing, all the way to turnkey delivery., The interior designer responsible for this home commented that it is a place she designed for great friends, a space that is a pleasure to live and work in, as well as to entertain and enjoy with family.

This is a meticulously maintained historic property, and the challenge of completely changing the layout while working with the only existing drainpipe was considerable: the goal of the renovation was to create a contemporary yet timeless apartment without losing the building’s classic style—a goal achieved precisely by capitalizing on this technical challenge. That’s where the idea came from to make the main bathroom and the reading nook in the second bedroom the focal points.”Claudia points out.

Upon entering the home, we find ourselves in a hall where wallpaper reigns supreme C&C Milano, by Pepe Peñalver and molding by Orac Decor. The mirror is antique, and the console is by Gonzalo de Salas, on which sits a planter from HD Collection. The lamps are from ABC Lighting.

The kitchen, dining room, and living room are all combined into a single open-concept space. The kitchen is Vonna Studio and the lamps of Maisons du Monde. The interior designer notes that “The owners love the kitchen, where they work and watch TV”.

The dining area is situated next to the fireplace, which is highlighted by a change in color. This detail helps define the space without taking up any room. The rug is from The Rug Company, in BSB, and above the fireplace is Fire You can see a photo of Fhe.es Gallery. The table is a design by Gonzalo de Salas and the chairs of On the Way Home, just like the bench. The wallpaper is by Photowall and the lamp is from Marantikk.

“My style is basically timeless, eclectic, and daring—a blend of classic and contemporary elements that takes you on a sensory journey.”.

The intention was always to preserve all the apartment’s original, historic features and restore those that had been lost over the years, combining them with a bold yet timeless interior design that drew inspiration from Art Deco and evoked the style of *The Great Gatsby*.

In the living room, we see a white sofa and armchairs from Studio Bañón on a rug from The Rug Company, at BSB. The throw pillows are from CR Class, the tables are from Unico Milano; the black one is by Zuiver. He chose the mirror at Maisons du Monde and the console table from Gonzalo de Salas's collection. He bought the painting at YellowKorner Hermosilla and apply them in Marantikk.

The architectural and interior design project focused on creating open, versatile, and integrated spaces; a spacious living area; bringing natural light into every room; ensuring each bedroom had its own en-suite bathroom; and making it possible to work from home in different areas of the house: perhaps that is why the owners love the kitchen, where they work and watch TV; the living room, which flows seamlessly into the office, dining room, and kitchen; the master bathroom; the reading nook; and the small urban garden by the bay window.

Our goal was for each space to have its own personality without straying from the Gatsby-inspired concept” adds Claudia, who says that “It was a truly unique project that I will always remember fondly. In fact, it served as my studio and showroom for many months, since the owners were delayed in returning to Madrid and insisted that I use it while our new studio was under construction. Through our work, we achieved a radical transformation, increased the home’s value, and most importantly, delivered the home of their dreams in Madrid to its new owners.”.

A few months ago, we published an interview with Claudia Schulteis in which she spoke to us about the bathrooms in this home. If you want to see her again, click here.

Santoña porcelain sink

In this industrial-style bathroom, we used the Santoña sink from Bathco, which is a bit more rectangular and fit perfectly with the countertop we had custom-made. With this mirror, it truly adapted perfectly to what we wanted.”.

On the wall, a geometric game is proposed, placed in an original way, giving a sophisticated art with a very art deco touch.

Java stone sink

In this case, we used the pedestal sink and included it in a very fun and eclectic bathroom.”.

New Magdalena Porcelain Sink

The architect manages to personalize this bathroom and make it seem like it's not a bathroom. To do this, she places “A decorative hanging lamp, a backlit mirror, a mirror hung from the ceiling, wallpaper that has nothing to do with a bathroom, a countertop in a different color. In this case, for example, we made this furniture with this dado, we put the sink New Magdalena by Bathco of complementing. Also, we played with a different tone in terms of the towels and the decoration, and that has made it very personalized for the person who will be using it.”.
