Brightness and livability
Projects, ResidentialA couple with two young children wanted to renovate their home in the center of Madrid with the goal of making better use of the space by redistributing the rooms. To achieve this, they enlisted the help of B+J Architects and Trace Projects.
Below you can see the renovation process of this project, which focused on achieving a more open, usable space with fewer partitions and more available square meters. To achieve this, it was based on two very specific keys: luminosity and habitability.
The architect from B+J Architects, Juan Fdez.-Turégano Pérez, explains that “In this comprehensive renovation, the main focus was on opening up the space and «deconstructing» the existing hallway, breaking the corner of the kitchen with a glass partition. Details such as the shadow skirting board, the exposed concrete beams found during construction, the sink integrated into the dressing room, and the floor-level lighting make this home a unique project.”.
Kitchen and dining room
The intention was for the kitchen to be an independent space but without sacrificing the hallway's brightness, which is why a glass louver with black frames that allow for a visual opening.
The door provides access to an open space designated for dining. Here you can see the common denominators of all the rooms in the house: the oak of the floors and carpentry, the white of the walls, and the black details.
Living room – work in progress
The living room is accessed from the dining room, and in it, you can see a bookshelf designed with no limits at its ends and finished in oak. This work of carpentry It manages to give warmth to the room, along with the natural wood flooring and the indirect lighting from the directional spotlights.
“When unifying noble spaces, the frames existing ones could not be preserved. However, similar ones were installed with a more modern touch and in line with the new design of the project. No detail is spared in a renovation of this magnitude. The result is unbeatable.”comments Fdez.-Turégano.
The objective of providing spaciousness, modernization, and bringing in life and light is also achieved to a great extent in the living room.“Regarding the load-bearing wall in the living room, the two openings that connected it to another room were maintained, transforming it into the dining room and thus creating a single living-dining space. This, along with the visually open kitchen, increases the perspective by uniting the three spaces into one.”the architect says.
Access to the sleeping area
The tour of the rooms included floor lighting, which can serve as the sole guide to the rest areas without having to turn on the main lights. This avoids waking sleeping children with the door ajar.
In this hallway, you can see the shadow skirting board creating a single line that runs around the perimeter of the main area. The exposed concrete beams found during construction give character to the access to the master bedroom and the bathroom.
Bedroom XL
At the end of the hallway, there is a door that provides access to the main bedroom. To the right, we find the main bedroom where white is once again the protagonist, with black accents and woodwork. In this case, the custom-made wardrobe installed next to the bed does not go unnoticed; the white doors are combined with the natural wood built-in shelving.
The cement beam crowns the entrance to the bathroom. A suspended wooden cabinet was placed there, on top of which they placed two Carnac vessel sinks from Bathco. This model is presented in smooth natural porcelain, with a smooth interior and a bush-hammered exterior. This front is finished with black faucets, round mirrors, and a textured tile.

All the details that can be seen in this renovation make it a unique project and position it as one of the architecture studio's favorites.
