Gaucho of the port, a puzzle of textures

Atelier

Gastronomy and art unite once again to pay homage to the many moments shared around a table. A passion for cooking and a taste for original pieces have made this restaurant a benchmark.

Tristán Moziman, also known as Chucho, decided to open a restaurant specializing in Argentinian beef in Santander (Spain). He wanted to convey through an image the qualities of Argentinian beef, which is world-renowned. It is a high-quality meat thanks to the vast expanses of land and an optimal climate where the finest cattle breeds are raised. That traditional aspect, combined with the typical atmosphere of age-old butcher shops, was what he conveyed to The artists from Bathco Atelier.

The project developed for this restaurant had some clear references. One of them consisted of a cow representation made from different types of leather in a patchwork style. The artists studied how to translate that representation into a pictorial-ceramic language. It was then decided to depict a calf as if it were a puzzle. Each piece would identify the different types of meat. Black pigment was used to draw all the contours of the animal and name each part, alluding to the old-fashioned representations that used to illustrate and decorate butcher shops and pork shops, where they indicated how to cut the meat and the names of each cut.

To differentiate each of the pieces that make up the body, the artists employed diverse textures and colors. The resulting smudges were achieved through the use of different types of brushes, Japanese brushes, sponges, and even plastics. The different paint densities also played an important role.

To complete the composition, both the name and the logos were created using ceramic decals.

The animal's representation, with a vintage character and reminiscences, was offset by the use of textures and a rectified tile support of a more elongated format, which gave the composition a contemporary feel. The mural has become the focal point of the space, in addition to being the restaurant's graphic image.
